Hello reader,
I do hope you're enjoying this continued good weather? Personally, I'm still wearing shorts, swimming in the sea and generally fending off autumn…

Following my call last month to ask followers to express an interest in 'Sketch Club' - I have been overwhelmed by the responses and am delighted to announce that SKETCH CLUB IS A GOER! So, if you fancy sketching indoors this autumn and winter, please read on…
Plus, my Top Tip is back, and a reminder of the final, full-day outdoor workshop of 2026 - with only 1 place now available! (at time of writing).

Kind regards, Shaun :-)

Top Tip: Go 'small' to gain confidence!

Shaun Forward discrete sketching in open spaces
Being confident to sketch outdoors is declared by my students as being one of their biggest hurdles. And yet, following each workshop, most of my students comment that they cannot believe how easy it actually felt to sketch outdoors in our small group.

My advice to everyone for their onward sketching journey, is to 'go small'. Just venture out with a small sketchbook and a few pens and blend yourself into the environment. No need to take your entire art collection and an easy chair with you!

These days, nobody takes any notice of a person working on their laptop in a coffee shop, or someone browsing their phone along the prom'. Likewise, they won't notice you sketching discretely from a public bench or coffee shop table. (The picture above shows me sitting on a bench sketching the pier yesterday and nobody even noticed I was there!)
Get a few trips like these under your belt and you'll be well on the way! You'll soon start to shake-off that self-consciousness and begin to feel self-confidence growing.
'Going small' is the new BIG…

Sketch Club is now live and bookable!
