Top Tip #2.

Use the 'pencil trick' to get that angle!

Click for Instagram Reel of Workshop
Being able to 'see' perspective in real life, is one of the most common hurdles students encounter on workshops - the 'pencil trick' can be a big help!
I covered an introduction to perspective in Issue #1 - and to be honest, it's more beneficial to get this on a face-to-face level - but this this 'pencil trick' is certainly helping a lot of my students. Basically, you just offer your pencil, (pen or hand) up to match the angle in question, a roof line for example, and lower it down to your sketchpad, and hold that angle in your mind's eye whilst stroking a pencil line on your paper along that plotted path.
Give it a go! You'll find it works. And if you need help, give me a buzz/email and I'll chat you through it. You'll find this takes a lot of 'mystery guesswork' out of whether you think that line is going upwards, or downwards…

Workshops come inside a bit more for the winter

As much as I love sketching OUTDOORS - I know I'm very much in the minority. Which is why I have adjusted my workshops to spend more time INDOORS, under cover and in the warm. The base venues I choose are always a welcome place for spreading out and enjoying the workshop. So, do not be put off by the title of my 'Outdoor Sketching Workshops'! Having said that, I will always take the opportunity for us to pop outside and sketch from life - when the weather is being kind.

NEW! 3 part workshop series

I am building up a waiting list of students ready to participate in a series of three, 3 hour sketching workshops. These will take place at a relaxed, local venue and we'll focus on a different key subject each week – getting you ready to hit the street and enjoy the world of Urban Sketching. £25pp per workshop £75 total. (basic materials included).
WAITING LIST: Please join by adding your contact details and workshop preferences to the simple google doc form on this link. No obligation, I'll just give you the option to book: https://docs.google.com/.../1FAIpQLSesZJ7Qs5c.../viewformNEW

Bournemouth & Poole Urban Sketchers

Don't forget, look out for your nearest Urban Sketchers meetings. The Bournemouth & Poole chapter is the nearest for most of my students. We meet at 11:00am on the last Sunday (normally) of the month - and sketch for two hours before reconvening for a 'throwdown' of all our sketches, a monthly team photo for the Facebook page and then a social coffee catch up. Everyone is welcome to join, or just come along and try it out - we're an all-abilities group and very friendly. Visit the Facebook page and check the 'Events' tab.
