Here we go with a brand new year – and perhaps I can encourage you to sketch more regularly, by making sketching one of your New Year resolutions!? Sketching for just 10 minutes, a few times a week, is all we need to start making a real difference to our ability.
And as I’ve said many times already, sketching is one of the most affordable and portable art forms I know of – and you do not need much in the way of kit. Just look a the header image, this small tin box contains all I need to create a whole range of different sketching styles. I take this with me everywhere. I also have a small watercolour travel set and a tiny juice bottle, which now contains water. I’ll either carry an A4 pad or small sketchbook. £30 worth of kit, grasped in one hand – how easy is that!
Multiple sketchbooks! For Christmas, I was lucky enough to receive a couple of new sketchbooks from my daughter, and they are just begging to be used. Both are small enough to fit easily into a coat pocket. I tend to always have several sketchbooks on the go at any one time. Some are for practicing techniques, other’s for more serious Urban Sketching, others for sharing with the grandchildren – and I know that when the ‘sketching’ moment strikes, I will have a sketchbook and some kit in my van, jacket, house or wife’s car!
