NEXT WORKSHOP: Tuesday 12th August 2025 – Pamphill, Wimborne
Based in the secluded grounds of Pamphill‘s picturesque St Stephen’s Church, this outdoors Sketch Walk Workshop will introduce you to sketching materials and techniques as we enjoy sketching the church – inside and out, farm buildings, cottages, a dairy complex, woodland walks, ancient signs and one of the smallest pubs in Great Britain!
Introduction. By special arrangement, we have been allowed to park our vehicles on the grassy verges of the church grounds and use my campervan, (with its canopy for sun protection), as our base.
We will start off sitting around the campervan, as we introduce ourselves and explore different sketching materials and techniques- whilst enjoying an endless flow of tea, coffee or cold drinks. Then some Q&As and a few practice exercises in your chosen media, before we move off to explore the beautiful church building and its grounds. The church warden has kindly offered to unlock the church for us for an hour, so we may enter and sketch the interior details, as well!
Tutoring. I will be continually tutoring and demonstrating each of you, as we progress throughout the entire day. And we will pause from time to time to reflect upon our works and I will appraise results and offer instruction to help each member grow their own individual skills.
Beyond the church. But it’s not all about the church! There is a lot to explore around the Pamphill Green, just beyond our secluded starter base camp. I will lead us on a walking tour that will take us on relatelvely level ground, through woodland paths to the Pamphill Dairy complex, and then on past several farm cottages and buildings, the village cricket pavilion, village school and finally to the ancient and quaint Vine Inn. This is perhaps one of the smallest Inns in Great Britain and features two small rooms and a lovely secluded garden with some covering, where we might enjoy a drink and another appraisal before the return walk. Please note, although we could all enjoy a packed lunch back at the campervan, (electric cool box available), we do also have the option of a sandwich or toasted sandwich at the vine where we could enjoy a brief working break.
Good to know. The overall distance we’ll cover is not much more than one (relatively level) mile. No hills, but the terrain will be typical country paths and grassy fields. Bring a small packed lunch, water a hat and stout footwear – and a small folding stool/chair. Suitable for beginners to improvers – be prepared for very satisfying exploration of a day!
