Spring is in the air - and so is outdoor sketching!
Do keep an eye on my website and dedicated Facebook page for new sketching workshop dates - you might even be among the first three to receive a 'Mad March' price reduction by joining the waiting list of my Old Town Poole workshop… where you'll get my 'Top Tips' first hand - see below for this month's tip. Plus, read on for details of a great Cornish cottage venue where I've just enjoyed a marvellous sketching getaway. Now available to book.

This month's Top Tip
Cross hatching with watercolour tinting is one of my favourite techniques for adding expressive tonal shading and textures to sketches.
After constructing my initial sketch in pencil, I like to use either a Uni-Pin 0.1 nib fineliner pen or my Sailor sketching fountain pen fitted with a fudé nib, to produce the ink work. Both options would be using permanent, waterproof ink. Once happy with this stage, I proceed to add colour washes to selected areas - which I feel lends the impression of a hand-tinted victorian engraving.
There are a number of penmanship skills which can be learned to achieve a range of effects.
I can demonstrate these techniques briefly to you at any of my workshops. Those with a keen interest might consider a half-day One-to-One coaching session. These can be arranged at any mutually suitable time and location. Full details here.

Back by public demand!
Owing to public demand, the Pamphill Sketch Walk workshop is back for 2026.
We will again be allowed access to the church interior as well as the church courtyard. We'll even be able to park in the secluded grounds and picnic on the grass beside our vehicles. I'll also lead us around the village to sketch the various estate worker's cottages, dairy buildings cricket pavilion - and hopefully get as far the tiny and ancient pub!

Suitable for beginners to improvers, please join me for a relaxing and inspirational session with other like-minded folks. Book up quickly as only two places remain.

Cornish cottage artists' retreat.
I’ve just enjoyed an excellent 4-day painting and sketching break with my good friend, Cliff Towler, at his holiday cottage in Cornwall. Having had such a great time, I’d like to share this with you, as his cottage is available to book to use for painting retreats as well as regular leisure breaks. Centrally located in Truro, ‘Sage Cottage’ accommodates four and has been with a country cottage agency for many years.

You can view a short Instagram reel of our break here. Feel free to ask me questions or click button to get full property details and make bookings.
