Looking for a New Year resolution, reader!
Perhaps you'll join me in my resolution of sketching more regularly? Sketching for just 10 minutes - a few times a week - is all we need to start making a real difference to our abilities.
PLUS I still have a few places on both of my January Workshops (ONE TOMORROW!) - how's THAT for an opportunity to get the sketching habit for 2026… See below of details.
(PS: apologies for seeming a bit behind the times here - but I've only just resolved a problem on my sever where this newsletter didn't get sent out on New Year's Eve - doh!) Please do let me know if you have not received any of my previous four newsletters of 2025.

TIP: If you're seeking inspiration for daily sketching, keep an eye on the 'Prompts' page of the official global Urban Sketcher's website.

My Top Tip of the month
Dedicated sketchbooks. By this I mean having a number of sketchbooks actively on the go at any one time and dedicating each one to a particular use. I tend to keep my 'main' current one for regular Urban Sketching, but keep another for practicing and experimenting with media and techniques. I'll use another small pocket-sized one for general sketching whilst out and about, possibly of artefacts at museums, or another for recording my everyday travels and journalling with annotated notes…
I find this multi-sketchbook habit helps me focus my main interest of Urban Sketching into one particular sketchbook and allows me to explore my other sketchy interests, dabble in different mediums and get a bit casual or experimental - without messing up my main sketchbook. I found I didn't do this very much, when I was trying to keep just one sketchbook.

At Christmas, I was lucky enough to receive a couple of new sketchbooks from my daughter, and they are just begging to be used. I hope you will join me in adopting this tip.

Minimal kit
I'm always being asked "How much kit do I take out with me?" And the answer is always, "Minimal!" I like to travel light, and for me, this means a shoulder bag with a pencil case of my favourite pens, pencils, brushes, rubbers etc, small travel set of watercolours, sketchbook and possibly a lightweight folding stool. But I normally find something else to perch on.

Spaces on 2 x January Workshops
I still have a couple of spaces available on each of the two January small group workshops in Westbourne and Wimborne. Please click either image, to go through to the workshop pages on my website. There's no better way to start that New Year's resolution! NB: It is now the eve of the Westbourne 13:01:26I workshop, and I can still accommodate a last minute 'walk-in' - just message me any time 07516406163, or simply turn up!
Also, my One-to-One workshop sessions are very popular, these can be booked as either half-day or full-day, at any mutually suitable time.
