Shaun Forward Outdoor Sketchbooking Workshops logo
Hello reader,
As I write this newsletter, it feels almost too hot to sketch outdoors, which reminds me of some of last summer's glorious workshops, where we had to keep ourselves in the shade and quaff plenty of water! Summer is a busy time for my workshops, and as you'll see below, the June event at Pamphill is already fully booked, so do act quickly if you would like to join me for the July workshop in Poole Old Town.
Meanwhile, I hope you continue to produce more 'hot' sketches during June.
Kind regards, Shaun :-)

This month's Top Tip

The one-dozen line skeleton

This is probably my 'toppiest' Top Tip ever! I believe it SO important to rough out the overall scope of an intended sketch - BEFORE even thinking about adding any details.
I like to draft out the main skeleton lines of the buildings in my proposed view. I aim for about a dozen lines - blocking in their basic shapes (like children's building blocks). This very quickly establishes the essence of the composition, including overall proportions and perspective. These few minutes put me in full control of my sketch, helping avoid the disappointment potentially suffered later. From this point, I can proceed to add in the next level of details, such as windows, doorways, chimneys - all in the knowledge that the scope of my sketch will include all the desired aspects - and also fit on the page!
You can see a closer view of the framed end result here.

Kit recommendation

This backpack stool from Mountain Warehouse is fantastic! It's lightweight, yet rugged. The sitting position is comfortable and it can be easily carried or moved about by using the jumbo handles, as well as the straps when walking. (Although, I'd like more padding in the straps).
It can hold a fair amount of sketching kit in the main storage area, which is also thermally lined - ideal for keeping your lunch cool! Better still, it is currently only £17.99 see it here.
