This month's Top Tip
I'm loving this small box easel! I can't sing the praises of this handy little piece of kit enough! Okay, it was an impulse purchase (just like all the others LOL!), but I am so glad I bought it. It's small enough to carry easily and without hinderance - it also fits into my various shoulder bags. Yet the sliding drawer is large enough to contain a decent amount of sketching kit and sits nicely on my lap when seated on a scissor stool. The pop-up support has a 'deckchair' strut which is adjustable to several angles. I also fitted a tripod bracket on the underside, so I can even mount it on my lightweight plein air tripod. However, I normally just travel light, carrying just the box by it's handle, with my kit inside it and my sketchpad clamped to the outside. Available from Hobbycraft for just £24 - I think it's a real no brainer!

Poole Old Town Sketch Walk - 24th March
This Sketch Walk Workshop was scheduled to be a group of 6, but luckily for Debra ☘️, it was undersubscribed and became a One-to-One! However, we both enjoyed the workshop regardless of the wind, cold, damp and drizzle! A cosy base camp was provided by the Salt Pig Café for our sheltered work and sorties into the ancient streets for sketching. The friendly staff Poole Museum extended a warm welcome to sketch the town’s historical artefacts - and also rooftops, from their 3rd floor balcony. It was good to see Debra gain the confidence to sketch outdoors and start to ‘see’ only the essential details required for a swift sketch.

And now for something completely different!
In my quest for more expressive mark-making, I'm experimenting with a range of mixed media. This sketch of jars from my kitchen cupboard was made with Tempera Paint Sticks - nothing like a half-inch tip to loosen up your style! I aim to report more on my progress, next month…
