Top Tip #1.
The 15 minute challenge
A big 'thank you' to Julie, seen here in her white coat on our recent Workshop at Pamphill church, who was instrumental in bringing about a new aspect that will now feature in all future workshops! The '15 minute challenge'
This proved to be a great success with my students, as we were able to really focus all our efforts into trying to achieve a simple sketch of a reasonably small aspect - such as a brass lantern - in a timed 15 minutes. The stop watch was on and so was the pressure - and also the fun! Everyone managed to achieve a fairly good likeness of the lantern and we were all surprised that the enforced time-frame had such a desirable effect! The observational skills we acquired enabled everyone to leave out all the unnecessary details and focus only on the essential elements. We went on to challenge ourselves to quickly capture a reasonable likeness of some decorative masonry around the entrance porch and then to bigger things - the side view of the church itself. Lots of quick sketches offer encouraging skill growth…

Tuition: Always 'one-to-one' as standard!
Because I keep my workshops to small groups of around 5 students maximum, I am able to deliver one-to-one tuition to all students throughout the workshop!
We always start off as a collective group for introductions and an overview of sketching, materials, techniques etc and then I rotate between all students in turn, guiding them through every stage and process. This way, I can pass on my knowledge to each student - and at their own given ability level - making it possible to tutor beginners and improvers, alike.

Technique: Two point perspective
Perspective is generally the most challenging aspect for most of my students. I am working on a dedicated newsletter to cover this topic and you will receive it once completed. But please do feel free to contact me if you want to chat about this subject before then - I'd be very happy to help.

The diagram below, is one I produced especially for the Pamphill Church Workshop. This demonstrates how all lines on the two planes of this church always disappear to their individual 'vanishing point' - to the left or right, which is always on the horizon / your eye level.
