The need to completely reupholster my grandmother’s 100 year-old nursery armchair has created a desire to learn more about upholstery and up-cycling vintage furniture.

The chair has been in our family for over a century, used originally by my grandmother to nurse her seven children and then my my mother two nurse her three. It had fallen into a sad state of repair, so I enrolled on an upholstery course and used the chair as my project. I was skilfully guided through all the (very many!!) traditional upholstery stages required,to strip it back to the bare frame – through webbing, re-springing various sewing techniques, wadding, quilting, button making and tacking – to end up with a wonderfully refurbished end result!
Having now acquired some upholstery tools, I’m now looking forward to working on my mother’s slipper chair and then picking up a few pieces at the market to refurbish. Commissions welcomed 😉
